During the turmoil in Bangladesh, former captain Mashrafe Mortaza’s house was reportedly torched amid the violence and chaos following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and departure on Monday.
Mortaza, who represents the Narail-2 constituency in the Khulna division, was re-elected as an Awami League candidate led by Hasina in the 2024 general elections.
Local media reported that vandals targeted and set fire to Mashrafe Mortaza’s house after the Prime Minister departed the country amid widespread student protests.
Throughout his cricketing career, Mortaza captained Bangladesh in 117 matches, amassing 390 international wickets and scoring 2,955 runs across 36 Tests, 220 ODIs, and 54 T20Is. After retiring from cricket, Mortaza joined Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League in 2018 and was subsequently elected as a Member of Parliament for the Narail-2 constituency.
News24 also reported that the protestors set ablaze the District Awami League office and inflicted damage on the residence of its president.
Additionally, the crowd breached the opulent Ganabhaban, the official residence of the Prime Minister, looting items including her television, furniture, and various personal belongings, including her clothes. Sheikh Hasina’s departure from Bangladesh marks the end of her second 15-year term in office. Over the past 30 years, she had led the country for 20 years, continuing the political legacy of her father, who was assassinated with his family in a 1975 coup.
Upon arriving in India, Hasina’s son revealed that although she wished to remain in Bangladesh, family members urged her to leave for safety, leading to her decision to depart.
“She wanted to stay, she did not want to leave the country at all. But we kept insisting that it wasn’t safe for her. We were concerned for her physical safety first; so we persuaded her to leave,” her son Joy told NDTV
