After a commanding 241-run victory over the West Indies in the second Test of their three-match series, England have climbed from the bottom of the ICC World Test Championship standings.
England secured their series win late on the fourth day as spinner Shoaib Bashir starred with figures of 5-41, marking his third career five-wicket haul. His performance was instrumental in dismissing the West Indies for 143 runs as they chased a daunting target of 385 for victory.
With a commanding 2-0 series lead against the West Indies, England, led by Ben Stokes, now have the opportunity to achieve a clean sweep as they prepare for the third and final Test starting in Birmingham on Friday.
Following their latest triumph, England have surged up the World Test Championship standings, overtaking South Africa, Bangladesh, and the West Indies to secure the sixth position, according to the ICC.
England’s current standing reflects a 31.25% accumulation of possible points from 12 Tests thus far. With 10 more Tests scheduled until year-end, they remain determined to secure a coveted spot in next year’s World Test Championship final at Lord’s.
Following the conclusion of their series against the West Indies, England will next face Sri Lanka in a three-Test series at home starting at the end of next month. Subsequently, they will embark on tours to Pakistan in October and New Zealand in November and December, each consisting of three Tests.
Meanwhile, the West Indies have dropped to ninth place in the standings with a win-loss percentage of 22.22% after their defeat to England at Trent Bridge. They have seven Tests remaining in this cycle against England (one), South Africa (two), Bangladesh (two), and Pakistan (two).
