As the discussion heats up about Joe Root’s chances of surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s world record in Test cricket, former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has stirred the pot with a daring and surprising forecast.
Root is making impressive strides in his Test career, and Karthik weighed in on whether England’s star batsman could eventually eclipse Tendulkar’s legendary mark for the highest runs in Test history.
Dinesh Karthik predicts Joe Root could break Sachin Tendulkar’s Test record.
The former England Test captain is currently positioned eighth on the all-time Test run-scorers list, and Dinesh Karthik has made a surprising assertion that Root could indeed break Sachin Tendulkar’s world record if he maintains his form and fitness in the coming years.
Tendulkar, celebrated as one of cricket’s greatest players, holds the record for the most Test runs with an impressive 15,921 runs from 200 matches. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting is second on the list with 13,378 runs.
In contrast, the 33-year-old Root is in the midst of a stellar Test career, having accumulated 11,942 runs from 143 matches. To surpass Tendulkar’s record, Root needs approximately 4,000 more runs, a seemingly daunting task. Nonetheless, Root’s recent performances and age suggest the possibility of achieving this milestone.
During a recent conversation on Cricbuzz, Karthik made a bold prediction, suggesting that Root could indeed surpass Tendulkar’s legendary record with a few more years of exceptional play. Karthik praised Root as a top-notch player and expressed confidence in his potential to reach this historic feat.
Moreover, Karthik is confident that if Root sustains his present form and fitness, he has the potential to surpass Tendulkar’s monumental record and become the highest run-scorer in Test cricket history.
Significantly, Root has been in exceptional form during the current three-match Test series against the West Indies on home soil. The right-handed batsman has already accumulated 204 runs at an impressive average of 68.00 across the first two Test matches.
Dinesh Karthik said on the Hey CB with DK show: “Root has played 152 (143) Test matches and scored over 11,000 runs (11,942). Sachin Tendulkar has played 200 Test matches. So that would basically mean 48 Test matches more for Joe Root, which would at least take six seasons. And in six seasons, he has to get close to at least 4,500 runs.”
Karthik further said, “Is it a possibility? Joe Root is a gun player; it is a possibility. A couple of things. A – he needs to be really fit through the next six years, and he’ll be 39 by the time he finishes, so it’s not going to be easy, but mathematically, is it possible? Yes.”
