Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Moin Khan has declined a position with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), citing a conflict of interest due to his son, Azam Khan, being an active member of the national team.
Moin Khan had an illustrious international career, playing 69 Test matches and 219 ODIs for Pakistan. He scored over 6,000 runs, including four centuries and 27 half-centuries, and captained the team in 13 Tests and 34 ODIs.
He was appointed Pakistan’s chief selector in July 2013 but was dismissed in 2015 after a disappointing Cricket World Cup. Moin also served as team manager starting August 2013 and became head coach in February 2014. Currently, he is the head coach of the Quetta Gladiators in the PSL.
Azam Khan, his son, has played 14 T20 Internationals for Pakistan, amassing 88 runs in 13 innings with an average of 8.8 and a strike rate of 133.33. He was also part of the Pakistan squad in the T20 World Cup 2024, where the team, led by Babar Azam, was eliminated in the group stage.
Doesn’t Seem Appropriate For Me – Moin Khan
Moin Khan said that it would be inappropriate to accept a position with the Pakistan Cricket Board. He highlighted his ongoing commitment to Pakistani cricket despite not accepting roles, adding that he remains available to support the sport.
“It doesn’t seem appropriate for me to take a position now that Azam is playing. I am always available for Pakistan cricket,” Moin Khan stated.
Will Talk About It After Waqar Younis’s Announcement – Moin Khan
Moin Khan emphasized that the PCB has operational issues. The former Pakistan head coach highlighted the urgent need for changes within the organization. He opened up about rumors about future roles, stating that he would discuss them only after Waqar Younis’s announcement.
“The national team will have a ‘surgery’ only if a doctor came to the board,” Moin Khan said.
“I will talk about it after Waqar Younis’s announcement,” Moin Khan clarified.
Waqar Younis has reportedly agreed to take on the role of advisor to PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi. The former Pakistan fast bowler will be responsible for overseeing both the national red-ball and white-ball teams, as well as the national coaches. According to Cricbuzz, Waqar will provide direct reports to Naqvi regarding cricket-related matters.
Disappointed With The Team’s Performance – Moin Khan
The 52-year-old expressed disappointment with the team’s performance during the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and United States of America (USA) in June. Moin added that it was disheartening for him as a former captain and cricketer.
“The World Cup preparations were evident to everyone. As a former captain and cricketer, I was also disappointed with the cricket team’s performance,” Moin remarked.
