India’s wicket-keeper batsman Ishan Kishan has recently come back into the spotlight. After taking a break for personal reasons and subsequently missing out on domestic cricket, Kishan’s central contract with the BCCI was discontinued.
However, according to Cricbuzz, Kishan is poised to return to the domestic scene in the upcoming season. The Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) has named him in their list of 25 pre-season probables.
Sources indicate that Kishan has committed to playing for Jharkhand this season and might even be considered for the captaincy. He has assured the JSCA of his full participation throughout the domestic campaign.
Additionally, it is reported that Kishan has received advice from both his supporters and the Indian selectors. They have cautioned him that he might miss out on international opportunities if he does not seize this moment in his career.
The report also highlighted that once Ishan Kishan re-establishes himself in the domestic circuit, he will be a strong candidate for national selection. Shreyas Iyer, who, like Kishan, was dropped from the central contracts, has already made his return through the ongoing ODI series against Sri Lanka.
The Indian domestic season kicks off with the Duleep Trophy red-ball competition on September 5. However, Kishan might not feature in this tournament due to his decision to skip the previous season’s state matches.
Last year, Kishan was a key player for India across all formats. He delivered solid performances and was the preferred wicket-keeper in Rishabh Pant’s absence.
Kishan, who played in the ICC World Cup 2023, withdrew from the Test series against South Africa citing mental fatigue, which led to his exclusion from subsequent selections. Despite being urged by the team management to participate in domestic cricket, Kishan declined, leading to the BCCI’s decision to terminate his central contract.
Kishan’s most recent appearance was in the Indian Premier League, where his season with the Mumbai Indians did not meet expectations. Nonetheless, with his return to domestic cricket imminent, a comeback to the national team seems plausible.
Jharkhand appoints SS Rao as coach for the upcoming season.
In other news, the Jharkhand Cricket Team has announced SS Rao as their new coach for the upcoming season. Rao, who has played 52 first-class matches, will take over from Debasis Mohanty, the coach from last season.
His appointment comes following a recommendation from the JSCA’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC). With Ishan Kishan returning to the team, expectations are high for the domestic season, making Kishan a key player to watch.
