Matthew Mott has resigned from his role as England’s white-ball head coach, according to an announcement from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Tuesday. The 50-year-old’s departure was widely anticipated following England’s disappointing performance at the recent T20 World Cup.
Despite reaching the semifinals, England’s campaign was lackluster, winning only one out of four games against other Test-playing nations. Their journey came to an end with a significant 68-run defeat to eventual champions India in the semifinals.
This followed England’s earlier failure to defend their ODI World Cup title, where they struggled, managing just three wins out of nine matches. The T20 World Cup represented a crucial opportunity for Matthew Mott to lead England to a third title, but he ultimately fell short in inspiring the team to victory.
I am immensely proud: Matthew Mott
Matthew Mott joined England’s coaching staff in May 2022 and immediately made his mark by leading the team to victory in the T20 World Cup in Australia. Under his guidance, England also secured victories in white-ball series against Australia, Bangladesh, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, and Pakistan.
Despite these successes, Mott faced challenges in ICC competitions, where England’s performance fell short of expectations. These difficulties ultimately influenced his decision to resign from his position as head coach.
“I am immensely proud to have coached the England Men’s team; it has been an honour. We have put everything into trying to achieve success over the past two years, and I am incredibly proud of the character and passion that the team has displayed during that period, including a magnificent T20 World Cup victory in 2022,” said Matthew Mott.
“I would like to thank the players, management, and everyone at the ECB for their commitment, support, and hard work during my time. I leave with many great friendships and incredible memories.
“Finally, I would like to thank the England fans, who have always backed us and given us fantastic support wherever we have travelled around the world,” he added,
Meanwhile, assistant coach Marcus Trescothick has been appointed on an interim basis to replace Matthew Mott for the remainder of the home summer. The former England opener will take charge as interim coach for the upcoming series comprising three T20Is and five ODIs against Australia in September.
