Mohsin Naqvi, currently serving as Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), is anticipated to assume a prominent role within the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). Recent reports from Pakistani media suggest that Naqvi is poised to step into the presidency of the ACC, succeeding the incumbent president Jay Shah.
Earlier this year, Mohsin Naqvi was appointed as PCB Chairman, having been elected unopposed for a three-year term. His tenure has been marked by challenges, notably Pakistan’s early exit from the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in June, reflecting the team’s struggles under his leadership.
The PCB chairmanship has seen frequent turnovers since Ehsan Mani’s departure in 2021. Ramiz Raja served a brief 15-month term, while predecessors Najam Sethi and Zaka Ashraf held office for even shorter durations. Notably, Mohsin Naqvi also holds the esteemed position of Pakistan’s Interior Minister.
Mohsin Naqvi Set To Succeed Jay Shah – Report
Mohsin Naqvi is set to embark on a new role as the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) starting January 2025, as per recent reports from Pakistan. This move is seen as part of Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen its influence in regional cricket governance.
Sources indicate that the ACC is preparing to formally announce Mohsin Naqvi’s appointment during its forthcoming meeting scheduled for October-November. The ACC presidency operates on a rotational basis among its member nations, with Jay Shah, currently holding dual roles as President and Secretary of the Indian board, granted a one-year extension earlier this year. Naqvi is slated to assume the ACC presidency following Shah’s term conclusion in January 2025.
Previously, the ACC presidency was held by Nazmul Hassan from the Bangladesh Cricket Board until January 2021, when Jay Shah assumed leadership. Under Shah’s stewardship, the ACC successfully organized the 2022 T20 Asia Cup in the UAE and the 2023 ODI Asia Cup in Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Pakistan suffered Group Stage Exit In T20 World Cup 2024
Pakistan faced an early exit from the T20 World Cup 2024 held in the West Indies and the United States, with the Babar Azam-led team failing to progress beyond the group stage. Their campaign began with a surprising defeat to the associate team USA in the opening match, followed by a loss to traditional rivals India in their subsequent game. These defeats severely undermined their chances of advancing to the Super 8 stage of the tournament.
Responding to the team’s disappointing performance in June 2024, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi advocated for significant reforms, describing the need for “major surgery” within the Pakistan national cricket setup. As part of these changes, Naqvi removed former players Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq from the selection committee, appointing a new seven-member panel to oversee future team selections.
Looking ahead, Pakistan’s next cricketing action will be during the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh on home soil. This series holds significance as part of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle, with the first match scheduled to commence at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on August 21.
