Naseem Shah, a fast bowler for the Pakistan National Cricket Team, recently highlighted the challenges posed by having overseas coaches. He acknowledged that the language barrier is a significant issue, with some players struggling to fully grasp what the coaches are conveying.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has consistently favored employing foreign coaches, believing that their international experience can provide valuable exposure for Pakistani players. Currently, the team is under the guidance of Gary Kirsten for white-ball cricket and Jason Gillespie for red-ball cricket.
Despite the benefits of having these experienced coaches, the language barrier remains a notable challenge. Many players are not fluent in English, the sole language spoken by the coaches, which complicates communication and understanding. This issue has led to concerns from both experts and fans.
Naseem Shah admitted that the language difference can create obstacles, often requiring translators to bridge the gap. This situation can make it difficult for players to fully communicate their concerns or clarify instructions.
“You are right It is a matter of language barrier. Some boys understand it. But you need someone to translate it and explain it correctly. There are some things that you want to talk in private. But you can go with someone who can translate for you. It is a different thing to make someone understand in your language.”
I haven’t been given any specific plan as of now – Naseem Shah on his workload management
Naseem Shah also discussed his approach to managing his workload, revealing that the Pakistan Cricket Board has yet to provide him with a detailed plan. He acknowledged that there is a significant difference between the demands of practice matches and international games. Shah emphasized that he focuses on self-management and maintaining his performance as best as he can. He elaborated on his efforts to balance these challenges effectively.
“I haven’t been given any specific plan as of now. But as a professional, I know that after a long time, it is not easy to come back. Because no matter how many practice matches you play, there is a difference of the ground and sky in an international test match.
“The pressure on the body, the body load is different. So my effort is to do the required preparation from my side, I can do that. Because if you increase the bowling load after injury, then it is very difficult.”
Naseem Shah is set to return to the field in the upcoming Test series between Pakistan and Bangladesh. The series kicks off on August 21st in Rawalpindi, with the second Test scheduled for August 30th in Karachi. Both matches are important fixtures in the ICC Test Championship and will be pivotal for both teams’ standings.
