The IPL 2025 mega auction is tentatively scheduled for November in London, with the exact date to be confirmed later. IPL franchises are already strategizing for the event, with significant changes expected in the league, which will be announced after the auction.
During a meeting between IPL franchise owners and the BCCI on July 31, several team owners voiced their concerns about the mega auction, expressing a preference for mini auctions before each season instead. Teams such as Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders opposed the mega auction, arguing that it disrupts the team dynamics built over several years and impacts consistency. They were particularly resistant to releasing key players who are crucial to their success.
IPL 2025 Mega Auction To Be Held In November In London: Reports
During the meeting, key topics included player retentions, mega auctions, and salary caps. SRH owner Kavya Maran voiced strong opposition to mega auctions, supported by KKR franchise owners.
She highlighted that building a successful squad requires time and investment, noting how players like Abhishek Sharma have taken years to reach consistent performance levels. Maran pointed out that this is true for many players across teams.
Other significant issues discussed were the involvement of overseas players and the Impact Player rule. Maran also proposed that the BCCI ban overseas players who sign up for the auction but later withdraw from the season.
Delhi Capitals owner Parth Jindal criticized excessive retentions and the Impact Player rule, arguing that it restricts opportunities for all-rounders, particularly Indian all-rounders, to showcase their talents.
“I was surprised that there was a debate on whether to hold the big auction. Some people said that there should not be a mega auction at all. There should be only smaller auctions. I’m not in that camp.”
“I feel that it evens the playing field and it’s very good for everyone. It makes the IPL what it is. It makes it competitive. It makes it an even playing field. What we are learning is that team owners don’t want the auction. It’s just a few owners” Parth Jindal said on mega auctions.
The BCCI came out with a statement after the meeting was held saying that they will review all the suggestions put forward by the franchises and come out with a response by the end of August.
“The franchise owners tabled feedback on player regulations and other commercial aspects, including central merchandising, licensing, and gaming. The BCCI will now take these recommendations to the IPL Governing Council for further deliberation and evaluation before formulating the IPL player regulations,” Shah said in the release.
