Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has called on the Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team to secure victory in the current ICC T20 World Cup 2024 as a fitting tribute to their coach and cricketing legend Rahul Dravid. Dravid, set to step down as head coach after the tournament, never won a World Cup during his playing career.
Virender Sehwag passionately urges Team India to clinch the T20 World Cup 2024 for Rahul Dravid. Despite his illustrious playing career, Dravid missed out on winning a World Cup. Now as coach, Sehwag hopes the team can emulate their 2011 success under Gary Kirsten, winning the title for Sachin Tendulkar
Virender Sehwag said by Cricbuzz: “We played the 2011 World Cup for Sachin Tendulkar. So, this T20 World Cup can be for Rahul Dravid. At least as a coach he gets to win the World Cup and get the badge of being a World Cup winner, which he didn’t get as a player.”
Virender Sehwag – Rohit Sharma made our hearts happy
In a stellar display for India in St. Lucia, Rohit Sharma blazed a trail with an explosive innings of 92 runs off just 41 balls, guiding his team to a 24-run victory over Australia in their final Super-8 match on June 24. His innings included eight towering sixes, propelling India to a formidable total of 205-5 in their allotted 20 overs.
The 37-year-old set multiple records with his phenomenal performance, surprising even Virender Sehwag, who initially anticipated Rohit to dominate only during the powerplay. Instead, Rohit continued to dominate the Australian bowlers throughout the innings, providing immense entertainment and earning praise for his impactful contribution.
Summing up the spectacle, Sehwag remarked, “I haven’t seen better entertainment in this World Cup. I thought he’d stick around for just the first six overs, but he continued well beyond that. He delighted our hearts—what more could we ask for?”
Looking ahead, India is scheduled to face defending champions England in the second semi-final of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 in Guyana on Thursday, June 27. The first semi-final, set for the same day, will feature South Africa against Afghanistan at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad & Tobago.
