Abhishek Sharma reveals the influence of Yuvraj Singh and Brian Lara on his career
The young all-rounder Abhishek Sharma has benefited significantly from the mentorship of Brian Lara, whom he first encountered during their time together at Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL, where Lara served as coach. Since then, Lara has been actively mentoring Abhishek, imparting batting techniques, strategic wisdom, and mental resilience that have been crucial for the 23-year-old’s development.
During the challenging COVID-19 period, Abhishek also received intensive training at a specialized camp organized by Yuvraj Singh, the former Indian all-rounder. He emphasized how fortunate he feels to have both Lara and Yuvraj as mentors, highlighting their invaluable guidance not only in cricket but also in life. Abhishek regularly seeks their counsel, drawing on their extensive experiences, which have proven immensely beneficial to his growth as a cricketer.
I’m lucky to have Brian Lara and Yuvraj Singh as mentors: Abhishek Sharma
Abhishek Sharma said in a video shared by Star Sports on social media platform: “I liked Brian Lara and Yuvraj Singh from the beginning. And luckily, I got both of them as mentors. Whenever I discuss something with them, I feel that they have been through this before. So, whenever I have a problem, not just in cricket but even off the field as well, I personally text or call them. I always get the right answer from them.”
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opener, along with teammates Shubman Gill and Prabhsimran Singh, stayed at Yuvraj Singh’s residence for a private and unofficial two-month training camp.
Yuvraj Singh, the former World Cup winner, organized the camp to offer focused coaching in batting, bowling, and fielding to the players. Additionally, the camp featured weekly interview sessions on Sundays, where the cricketers received evaluations and guidance on various facets of the game directly from Yuvraj himself. The initiative provided an exclusive opportunity for the players to enhance their skills under the mentorship of a seasoned cricketing legend, outside of any official cricket association framework.
Yuvraj Singh used to interview us every Sunday: Abhishek Sharma
Sharma emphasized how this rigorous training regime was crucial in enhancing his skills, particularly in batting. He signed off by saying, “During COVID, I stayed at his (Yuvraj) house. Me, Shubman Gill, and Prabhsimran Singh. He had set up an off-season camp. Especially off the record, not with any association.
But he trained all three of us. And I think that training was very useful for every batsman and every player. Especially for me. Because it was a two-month period for us. In batting, bowling, and fielding. Even in our interview course, he used to interview us every Sunday. So, I think that helped a lot.”
