The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is preparing for the upcoming challenge of hosting the Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled to take place in Pakistan in February next year. However, amidst the anticipation, several hurdles lie ahead for the board as they gear up for the 50-over tournament.
One of the primary challenges facing the PCB and the International Cricket Council (ICC) is the potential participation of the Indian team in the tournament. Given the strained relations between the two nations, there is a significant likelihood that the Indian team may not travel to Pakistan, citing security concerns as a major deterrent.
Recently, ICC officials visited Pakistan to assess the preparations for the Champions Trophy 2025. Reports emerged suggesting that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) proposed a hybrid model for the tournament, similar to the one implemented during the Asia Cup 2023. Under this model, India’s matches would be held outside Pakistan, while the remaining fixtures would take place in Pakistan.
However, according to the latest reports from IANS, the PCB has outrightly rejected the idea of a hybrid model. The PCB insists on hosting the entire tournament in Pakistan and has proposed specific dates for the Champions Trophy 2025.
As per the reports, the PCB intends to host the Champions Trophy from February 19th to March 9th across three prominent venues: Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Lahore. Notably, the PCB plans to stage India’s matches in Lahore due to logistical reasons and to facilitate the Indian team’s participation with greater ease.
A source close to the PCB confirmed the rejection of the hybrid model and elaborated on the decision to stage India’s matches in Lahore. Speaking to IANS, the source explained the rationale behind this decision.
“We have not opted for the hybrid model. However, we have given this leverage that India’s matches can be played in Lahore only. This way, the team will not be required to move around cities within Pakistan and its security can be well maintained in Lahore.”
“India can be based in Lahore for the entire tournament. This would minimize logistical and security complications associated with their travel between cities. The proximity of Lahore to Wagah Border Crossing is also going to be more suitable for Indian fans. However, the question remains, if India would accept and participate in the event”,
According to reports, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has outlined the distribution of matches for the Champions Trophy 2025 across three major cities. Karachi is set to host three matches, including the tournament opener and one of the semi-finals. Lahore, on the other hand, is expected to stage seven matches, with the prestigious final likely to be held at the Gaddafi Stadium.
Meanwhile, Rawalpindi will see a total of five matches, including one of the semi-finals. This allocation ensures a balanced distribution of matches across the venues.
Should the Indian team agree to participate in the tournament, it would mark their first visit to Pakistan since 2008. This potential development adds an extra layer of significance to the event, potentially fostering renewed cricketing ties between the two nations.
