The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has opted not to make any decisions regarding the contentious Impact Player rule for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024. The tournament is scheduled to take place later this year, from November to December.
The Impact Player rule, which has stirred significant debate since its introduction in the IPL 2023, has been criticized for favoring batters and leading to significantly higher scores.
BCCI Postpones Decision on Impact Player Rule for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024
As reported by Cricbuzz, the BCCI has notified all state associations in India about the new regulations via email. The board has indicated that the detailed playing conditions for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, including any decisions regarding the Impact Player rule, will be announced at a later date.
The decision is currently under review by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah. The board is still deliberating on whether to implement the Impact Player rule in the IPL for the upcoming season. During a recent meeting with IPL team owners, opinions were divided; some supported the rule while others criticized it as being ‘detrimental to Indian cricket.’
A final decision on whether the Impact Player rule will be applied to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 is expected in the coming days. This rule was previously trialed in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy before being introduced in the IPL.
Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy defending champions
The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 is set to commence on November 23, 2024. The tournament will feature quarter-finals on December 9 and 11, followed by the semi-finals on December 13 and the final on December 15.
Punjab, the reigning champions, secured the title in the 2023 edition. Abhishek Sharma, who emerged as India’s latest T20 star, was named Player of the Tournament. He scored 485 runs in 10 innings and was the second-highest wicket-taker, just behind Riyan Parag, who led the charts with 510 runs in the same number of innings.
Decision on the match fees of Impact Player
The report indicates that the BCCI has clarified that the Impact Player will be entitled to the same match fees as the other members of the Playing XI. The board has already communicated this decision to the state associations.
“With regards to Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, if a team decides to use the ‘Impact Player’ during the match, he will be eligible for 100 percent match fees over and above the playing XI,” the BCCI wrote in its mail.
The report also noted that if national selectors assign an Indian international player to a state cricket match, the state will need to pay this player higher match fees compared to the other 15 squad members.
