Former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden believes that the contributions of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy will be pivotal in propelling KKR towards their third Indian Premier League title. The two-time champions are set to face SRH in the summit clash on Sunday, May 26, at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Kolkata has displayed exceptional form this season, securing the top spot in the points table during the group stage with nine wins from 14 matches.
The team led by Shreyas Iyer solidified their position in the final by defeating SRH in Qualifier 1 with a commanding eight-wicket victory. Looking ahead to the much-anticipated clash, Hayden expressed his preference for KKR as favorites, citing their well-deserved break leading up to the game. The 2010 IPL champion also highlighted the formidable threat posed by KKR’s spin duo, Narine and Chakravarthy, particularly on the red clay surface in Chennai, which he believes will be the decisive factor. Notably, both Narine (16 wickets) and Chakravarthy (20 wickets) have been in sensational form, emerging as the top two wicket-takers for KKR this season.
“I have strong confidence that KKR will emerge victorious here. The team’s recent rest days and the opportunity to analyze this match will be advantageous. KKR’s triumph over SRH has undoubtedly bolstered their momentum. Additionally, the formidable spin combination of Narine and Varun Chakravarthy on the red clay surface is poised to make a significant impact,” remarked Matthew Hayden on Star Sports.
Pietersen also supports KKR to go the distance.
Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has echoed Hayden’s sentiments, emphasizing that KKR will be buoyed by their victory over SRH in Qualifier 1.
“The toss holds a 50-50 chance. We need to consider the potential impact of dew and also be prepared if it doesn’t materialize. It all comes down to mindset and confidence going into this match. KKR holds the edge in this regard, given their strong performances, convincing win in the qualifier, and their preparation over the last few days,” Pietersen remarked.
It’s worth noting that KKR has triumphed over SRH on both occasions this season. The two-time champions began their campaign with a four-wicket victory at their home ground and later dominated them in Qualifier 1 in Ahmedabad. As a result, Kolkata enters the final with high confidence and a strong desire to overcome the final hurdle and secure their third IPL trophy.
