Suryakumar Yadav has swiftly justified his elevation to captaincy in T20Is over Hardik Pandya, demonstrating his leadership prowess in just one series, or even one game. In the third T20I against Sri Lanka, India found themselves in dire straits after posting a modest total of 137/9. Initially struggling at 48/5, they managed to rally thanks to crucial performances from Shubman Gill (39), Riyan Parag (26), and Washington Sundar (25).
Sri Lanka appeared firmly in control during their chase, needing just 9 runs from the final two overs. Many had written off India’s chances by then. Yet, Suryakumar Yadav remained undeterred, revealing a few tactical surprises. In the 19th over, rather than relying on Mohammed Siraj, who had bowled excellently until then, Yadav entrusted the ball to debutant Rinku Singh, who had never bowled in a T20I.
This unexpected move paid dividends as Rinku Singh dismissed both Kusal Perera and Ramesh Mendis, conceding a mere 3 runs in the process. This strategic decision by Yadav showcased his astute captaincy and ability to think outside the box, ultimately turning the game on its head.
Riyan Parag impressed by Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy.
Suryakumar Yadav continued to defy expectations. He made yet another unexpected decision by taking the ball himself for the final over with Sri Lanka needing just 6 runs. The India captain’s bold move paid off handsomely as he conceded only 5 runs and claimed 2 crucial wickets, leveling the match and setting the stage for India’s victory in the Super Over, snatching triumph from the brink of defeat.
His captaincy decisions not only surprised the fans but also caught his teammates off guard. Riyan Parag admitted that like many others, he too anticipated Mohammed Siraj to bowl the last over and was pleasantly surprised by Yadav’s audacious call.
“It was very spontaneous, Rinku bhai bowling the 19th over. I was pretty sure Siraj bhai was going to bowl the last over but then Surya bhai just came on to bowl and got it to a Super Over,” said Riyan Parag after the game.
