Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Verma, and Ishan Kishan have once again been overlooked by the selectors in a significant decision. Earlier this year, these players fell out of favor with the selection panel for not participating in domestic games as directed by the BCCI, resulting in the loss of their central contracts. Following this latest snub, their prospects for a swift return to the national team seem remote.
Anticipation was high for their possible inclusion in the squad for the Zimbabwe series, especially with selectors expected to name a second-string team. Both Iyer and Tilak Verma had impressive IPL campaigns, with Iyer leading Kolkata Knight Riders to their third title, the first since 2014. Kishan also showcased his batting prowess with several noteworthy innings. Despite their performances, the selectors have opted against recalling them at this time.
The BCCI recently announced a 15-member squad for India’s upcoming tour to Zimbabwe, featuring a five-match T20I series scheduled from July 6 to 14 in Harare. Shubman Gill will captain the squad, marking his debut in a leadership role for the Indian team.
The squad includes players who excelled in the IPL, such as Rinku Singh and Avesh Khan, who were reserves for the T20 World Cup. Yashasvi Jaiswal, currently part of the T20 World Cup squad, has also been included.
Other notable names in the squad are Ruturaj Gaikwad, Abhishek Sharma, Dhruv Jurel (wicketkeeper), Nitish Rana, Riyan Parag, Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Kumar, and Tushar Deshpande. Their selection underscores the recognition of their IPL performances, with Parag ranking as the third-highest run-scorer and Sharma, alongside Travis Head, making significant impacts in T20 batting during powerplays.
