“Is the responsibility of developing all-rounders (lies) only for this tournament? The BCCI is conducting more than 2,000 cricket matches in a year,” Dhumal said.
Arun Dhumal, the chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has addressed the ongoing debates surrounding the impact player regulation in the tournament. Since its introduction in 2023, opinions have been divided among cricketers. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma recently expressed their views, suggesting that the impact player rule doesn’t foster the growth of all-rounders and tends to overly favor batsmen, thus skewing the game.
Arun Dhumal emphasized that the IPL isn’t the sole platform for players to exhibit their skills, highlighting the numerous tournaments organized by the BCCI where players can excel. He mentioned the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and various age-group tournaments as examples. Dhumal stressed that the responsibility for nurturing all-rounders shouldn’t solely rest on the IPL. He pointed out that the BCCI arranges over 2,000 cricket matches annually, providing ample opportunities for players to shine. Dhumal’s comments underscored the need for players to elevate their performance to secure spots in teams, including as all-rounders.
I can’t understand what this chat is all about: Dhumal
Moreover, Dhumal conveyed his bewilderment regarding the ongoing discussions surrounding the impact player rule. He expressed his viewpoint that the decision regarding the rule’s continuation will be deliberated upon in the forthcoming shareholders’ meeting.
“I can’t understand what this chat is all about. Do they want impact players without any impact, or little impact, or significant impact? You can’t have an impact player making no impact, we will discuss with all the stakeholders (about the rule staying). Will see their feedback and point of views also. And what works best for the tournament, in the interest of the players and franchises, we will do that. In the larger interest of the game, whatever is best for the tournament, we will do that,” Dhumal said.
