As the focus shifts towards the forthcoming T20 World Cup 2024 set to unfold in the West Indies and the United States of America, Dilip Vengsarkar, former Chairman of Selectors and ex-Indian cricketer, recently expressed his views on the composition of the current Indian squad slated for participation in this prestigious cricketing extravaganza.
Vengsarkar, who served as the chief selector from February 2006 to September 2008, delivered his insights at a gathering organized by the Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai, held at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday. Acting as the Chief Guest, he touched upon various facets of the game and also shed light on his assessment of the Indian contingent selected for the T20 World Cup 2024.
“I believe the current Indian team ranks among the finest globally. Even with the absence of players like Gill, Rahul, or Rinku Singh, I remain confident in its formidable strength. My best wishes are with them for a successful campaign, as I reckon this squad stands tall among the world’s best,” remarked Vengsarkar.
The surprising exclusion of Rinku Singh, notably relegated to the reserves despite boasting an impressive track record in the T20 format, sparked widespread astonishment within the cricketing circles.
Vengsarkar emphasized that T20 cricket is characterized by a high level of unpredictability, creating a scenario where any team could potentially triumph over another on a given day, provided circumstances align favorably for them.
He commented, “The key players would like to play an important role in this T20 World Cup. It’s very difficult to say in this format because everybody is a very important member of the team. But the thing is that, as you have seen in IPL, the first six were very important. How you give a good start in the first six was very important. And of course, in this format, anything can happen”.
“But I can’t say X, Y or Z is a key player in the team. In this format, anybody can win the match at any time of the match,” he added.
At present, the Indian team is in the midst of rigorous training sessions as they prepare for their inaugural match against Ireland scheduled for June 5 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. Their relentless pursuit of championship glory remains unabated.
