Former England captain Michael Vaughan, now an expert and commentator, has playfully criticized Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja for their lack of ICC white-ball trophies despite their retirement from T20Is following India’s 2024 T20 World Cup victory.
During an episode of the Club Prairie Fire podcast, Vaughan, who led the victorious English team in the 2005 Ashes, remarked that, “They’ll all agree that it is a perfect way to go, but they should have won more white ball trophies amongst them. To think that he (Rohit) has taken another seventeen years to get another one in his hand, I think he will be the first one to admit that they should have won one or two more.”
However, the 49-year-old acknowledged that their choice to retire from T20Is was timely, allowing them to concentrate on Tests, ODIs, and the IPL.
“What a way to go out with a win in Barbados and a trophy in your hand! Now they can sit back and play Test cricket, a bit of one-day cricket, and in the IPL, like MS Dhoni, play on forever. In Indian cricket, they will be replaced as there’s plenty of talent in that team,” he added.
Kohli was the first to announce his retirement from T20Is, confirming after India’s seven-run victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 final that it would be his last match in the format. Shortly after, during the post-match press conference, India captain Rohit Sharma surprised fans by also confirming his retirement. The day after India’s triumph, Ravindra Jadeja followed suit and retired from T20Is.
Kohli, the leading run-scorer in T20 World Cup history, concluded his career with this milestone achievement. Rohit, after a 17-year career, retired as the leading run-scorer in T20Is and holds the distinction of being the only Indian to win two T20 World Cup titles, as well as the first captain to secure 50 T20I victories.
